This impressive sterling silver Thistle Brooch is inspired by the original Viking Age tenth century penannular brooch that was found in Cellbridge, Co Kildare.The stunning original brooch can be seen in the Treasury exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology, Kildare St, Dublin. This brooch was commissioned by the National Museum from Breda Haugh, Dublin jeweller and goldsmith. It functions in the style of the original penannular brooches with a hinged pin that is fastened by passing the pin through the fabric and twisting the penannular ring to secure it in place. This can be worn on a coat, scarf, or wrap with the pin facing in any direction that is comfortable. Pin length 9.8cm. Ring diameter 4.5cm - 4.8cm. Weight 29g.
