Scabbards and Sheaths from Viking and Medieval Dublin is based on the corpus of 267 sheaths and 53 scabbards that is part of a large collection of medieval leatherwork dating from the early tenth century to the early thirteenth century that is held in the collections of the National Museum of Ireland. These were gathered between 1962 and 1981 during archaeological excavations of six major sites in old Dublin. A glossary at the end of the book explains the distinction between scabbards and sheaths, along with other terms. This work will be of interest not only to students and researchers, but also to re-enactors who want to add to their knowledge of knife sheath and sword scabbard making techniques of the Viking age, including the tools and leather working techniques that were employed, and the types of leather that were used.
