Professor O'Kelly, the most distinguished authority on Newgrange, here presents the full results of his excavations at Newgrange from 1962 to 1975. He demonstrates that the builders of this remarkable megalithic tomb, dated to around 3200BC, possessed considerable expertise in engineering, architecture, art and astronomy. The structure was deliberately orientated so that each year, at the winter solstice, the rays of the rising sun would shine through a special aperture to illuminate the inner passage and chamber. Every stage in the excavation, interpretation and restoration of the site is described and fully illustrated, with additional major contributions from Clare O'Kelly, who collaborated in her husband's work at Newgrange from its inception.
