The Sea Stallion from Glendalough is the nearest that we can come today to experiencing a complete longship from the Viking Age. At the same time this ship is an experiment. The 30m long Sea Stallion is a reproduciton of the Viking ship Skuldelev 2 that was originally built by the Scandanavians in or near Dublin around 1042 AD. The wood used in the construction of the ship originated in Glendalough, Co Wicklow. The Skuldelev 2 was retired from service near Roskilde, the royal seat of Denmark at the time. This book documents the original find, the reconstruciton and the return journey of The Sea Stallion from Roskilde to Dublin in 2004. This unique and ambitious experiment was organised by Roskilde’s Viking Ship Museum and supported by the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism in Ireland.
