These black sterling silver heart drop earrings are exclusive to the National Museum of Ireland. Created by Breda Haugh, Dublin silver and goldsmith, the Heart Collecton is inspired by the heart motifs that decorate some toasting forks and gridirons in our Museum collections. Forged by the blacksmith, they were betrothal gifts from a husband to be to his future wife. The "black" silver is sterling silver which has been coloured by oxidation. It may fade a bit over time which gives a lovely effect. It is perfectly safe and does not stain. It is used here to reflect the black of the forged iron artefacts in the Museum's collections. Examples are on display at the National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts & History and at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life. Dimensions: W 18mm (at widest) H 25mm (incl top).
